- EMV Credit Cards will be reissued in 2016.
What is a Chip Card?
Why Chip Cards?
The chip on your card provides additional security when used at EMV-enabled terminals. Data stored on the chip is difficult to counterfeit. It’s a smarter and safer way for you to conduct transactions.
Where can I use my Chip Card?
You can use your chip card anywhere MasterCard or Visa is accepted. Your card will be issued with a chip on the front of the card and the familiar magnetic stripe on the back of the card. This will enable the card to be used in magnetic stripe terminals as well as EMV-enabled terminals. You should be prompted by the terminal on whether to use the magnetic stripe or chip to complete the transaction.
Will I be required to use my PIN?
Depending on where you shop, you may be prompted to use your PIN when making purchases. It is generally recommended that the cardholder swipe the card first and follow any instructions from the cashier or that appear on the terminal to complete the transaction.
What are the benefits of EMV Cards?
The biggest benefit of EMV cards is increased security. Plus you’ll enjoy greater acceptance when traveling, as chip cards are common in over 130 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
When can I expect my EMV card?
Smart Financial Credit Union will begin reissuing debit cards starting February 2016. Be on the lookout for communications from Smart Financial Credit Union regarding your new card. If your card is set to expire during that timeframe or needs to be replaced (ie. damaged, lost, stolen), it will be reissued as an EMV debit card.
Is there anything I need to do?
Your replacement card(s) will be sent via mail and will arrive in a nondescript white envelope. Please take appropriate care to insure that you do not accidentally discard your new debit card and activate it accordingly. To ensure that you receive important updates, please be sure that we have your most current mailing address, phone number, and email address on file. Please let us know if your name, address or other contact information provided at the time of account opening has changed.
What happens to my automatic payments?
As soon as you activate your new card, be sure to update your account information for any automatic payments set up on your card. You will need to provide merchants with the expiration date and 3-digit code on the back of your new card to avoid any delays in processing future payments
